Chad, I think that's a great point. There's more to location then just public, or semi public check-ins. The concept of trading your always on location for deals / coupons is pretty interesting in a Tom Cruise kind of way.

Yes, we are planning on writing a future post on Apple's new restrictions on location-based advertising. We found the announcement intriguing, but probably not detrimental to the majority of social location apps. I agree with you that Apple would have a hard time keeping out promotional features from a brand's own app – however, we could see a model for Apple where they could possibly charge a brand to be able to include such features. There are also interesting parallels to Facebook's promotional regulations for their Fan Pages, and a location layer on top of that could be very interesting indeed.

I hear they've updated their policy too so that any apps using Core Location API for location based advertising will be rejected – though if it was used for a store based apps (e.g. you walk into Walmart and it comes up with a list of offers they have on, or you then walk into Waterstones and shows what offers they have) I guess consumers may have some use for it
